
Car or motor bike: Just enter Volterra, PI into your GPS and your car will find the way. Volterra is connected to four routes:
If you come from Genova or Rome… continue on the Autostrada A12 until Cecina. A beautiful road connects Cecina to Volterra.
If you come from Milano go until Parma Ovest, then take the scenic road through the Cisa pass towards La Spezia until you reach the Autostrada A12 going to Cecina. The road via Livorno-Pisa is a bit shorter but it doesn’t save time. Waze recommends staying on A12 until Cecina Nord.
From Milano you could also go straight towards Genova and then branch onto A12. This is a very comfortable route.
If you come from the Northeast, you will have to take the road from Firenze / Florence to Volterra. Difficult to navigate, please follow your GPS!

Train: Italian trains are wonderful! Take a Frecciarossa to Firenze S.M. station. If you book your train tickets through the Trenitalia website or the Trenitalia app you can book Frecciarossa Executive Class which is unbelievably comfortable and serves complimentary food and drinks. The trains run at 299 km/h.

Cecina train station is served by trains from Rome, Genova, Pisa and Firenze / Florence. There are (few) bus connections from Cecina to Volterra.
Pontedera-Casciana T. train station has good bus connections to Volterra Monday to Friday. The many trains from Firenze S.M. to Pontedera-Casciana T. look like a subway trains; there is no first class. If you want to pick up a friend, it is easier to pick him up at Pontedera station rather than Firenze S.M. station.
Ferries: From Corsica, Sardegna, Palermo, Barcelona and Tanger to Livorno. From the same ports plus Tunis to Genova.
Walking: From London take the Via Francingena from Canterbury to Rome… It passes close to Volterra. From San Gimignano to Volterra there is another old pilgrims’ walk.

Cycling… Tuscany is a paradise for cyclists. In Volterra, the Hotel San Lino is prepared to take care of you if you travel by bike. The Via Francingena welcomes bikes too.

Motor bike… The Harley Davidson Invasion on 24 September 2023… Tuscany is a paradise for bikers.
Volterra attracts enthusiasts: One day, there will be two hundred Harleys on the Piazza dei Priori, another day more than one hundred Renault R4 cars pass the city. There are super car meetings, super bike meetings, the Vespa World Club, mountain bikers, e-bikers, cycle racers… Volterra is not boring.
Tour buses allow visitors to see one amphitheatre, plus the Piazza dei Priori and queue for the best ice cream in Italy.
